Electromechanical characterization of a bimorph piezo for Energy Harvesting applications in road infrastructures

2012

Piezoelectric materials can be used as a means of transforming ambient vibrations into electrical energy that can be stored and used to power other devices. With the recent surge of micro scale devices, piezoelectric power generation can provide a convenient alternative to traditional power sources used to operate certain types of sensors/actuators, telemetry, and MEMS devices. However, the energy produced by these materials is, in many cases, far too small to directly power an electrical device. In the present study, piezoelectric devices will be investigated and experimentally tested to determine each of their abilities to transform ambient vibration into electrical energy. Tested piezoel…

Analysis of metallic impurity content by means of VUV and SXR diagnostics in hybrid discharges with hot-spots on the JET-ITER-like wall poloidal limi…

2019

In preparation for the upcoming JET D-T campaign, great effort has been devoted during the 2015-2016 JET campaigns with the ITER-like wall (ILW) to the extension of the high performance H-mode phase in baseline and hybrid scenarios. Hybrid discharges were the only ones that have been stopped by the real-time vessel protection system due hot-spot formation on the outboard poloidal limiter. Generation of hot-spots was linked to the application of high neutral beams injection and ion cyclotron resonance heating (ICRH) power. In tokamaks with high-Z plasma components, the use of ICRH heating is also accompanied by an increased metallic impurity content. Simultaneous control of hot-spot temperat…

Mapping electron-beam-injected trapped charge with scattering scanning near-field optical microscopy.

2016

Scattering scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM) has been demonstrated as a valuable tool for mapping the optical and optoelectronic properties of materials with nanoscale resolution. Here we report experimental evidence that trapped electric charges injected by an electron beam at the surface of dielectric samples affect the sample-dipole interaction, which has direct impact on the s-SNOM image content. Nanoscale mapping of the surface trapped charge holds significant potential for the precise tailoring of the electrostatic properties of dielectric and semiconductive samples, such as hydroxyapatite, which has particular importance with respect to biomedical applications. The meth…

Electron Angular Distribution in Laser-Assisted X-ray Photoeffect

1981

Calculations are reported of the differential cross section of the laser-assisted X-ray photoeffect from K shells showing that drastic changes occur in the shape of the ejected-electron angular distribution when laser photons are exchanged during the ionisation. This process appears well suited to the study of laser effects and multiphoton exchanges in laser-assisted atomic collisions.

An optimum design of the magnetic circuit of a PM linear electrical generator for the exploitation of sea waves.

2006

In this paper an approach to the optimization of the magnetic design of a Permanent Magnet (PM) linear generator for the exploitation of the energy contained in sea waves is presented. This approach consists of a two step procedure: the first one takes into account the stochastic features of the sea wave motion and describe the working condition of the machine under this motion by adopting a lumped parameter model. In this step the objective function is the energy production. The second step optimizes the generator by using the results obtained in the first step as the constraints that must be fulfilled by a design based on a Finite Element Method (FEM) analysis. Furthermore, the approach i…

The use of sea waves for generation of electrical energy: a linear tubular asynchronous electrical generator

2007

A linear tubular asynchronous generator to be used as generator driven by seawave is presented. The design criteria of a TLIM with hollowed iron induced part as well as the technological processes to be adopted and the materials utilized in the various parts are described. The methodologies for mechanical assembling and electric wiring are considered too. Finally, the prototype with bimetallic induced part that has been designed and built is presented and some experimental results on electrical and mechanical variables are shown.

A Ferrite Tubular Linear Permanent Magnet Generator (FTLPMG) analysis and design

2014

Several linear synchronous generators for the exploitation of sea wave energy have been proposed. Such machines do not require reactive power for the magnetization since they use permanent magnets for the excitation. The use of permanent magnets in a rough environment such as the marine environment may be a very weak point in the application of these kind of devices. In order to overcome this difficulty, the authors in this paper propose a linear synchronous electrical generator. Its excitation uses ferrites as suitable solutions to extract energy from sea waves. This paper describes the analysis and design of an improved axially magnetized tubular permanent-magnet machine in which several …

EV-planning: Electric vehicle itinerary planning

2014

International audience; In the latest few years, lot of efforts have been done to pave the way to sustainable mobility, in order to solve pollution problems and fuel shortage. The use of electric vehicles (EV) is considered as one of the best ecologic and economic solution. However, autonomy barriers and limitations slow the progress and the deployment of this technology. In this paper, we propose an advanced electric vehicles' fleet management architecture. This architecture considers the most important factors that can affect the traveling mode of electric vehicles, in order to offer different services to fleet management companies for an efficient monitoring and management of their fleet…

A multichannel piezo driver for active mirrors in X-ray telescopes

2016

X-ray astronomy is gaining importance for studying X-ray space sources such as single and binary stars, neutron stars, supernovae and black holes. Due to atmospheric absorption, X-ray telescopes must operate in space on satellites. Among the causes limiting the resolution of modern telescopes are distortions in mirrors shape. An innovative approach for X-ray mirrors aims at correcting the shape errors by means of piezo-ceramic actuators glued to the back of the mirrors, thus creating an “active mirror”. In order to test the viability of shape correction, we fabricated [1] a prototype of a thin glass active mirror, sized 20 cm x 20 cm with a 400 um thickness (Fig. 1). The mirror can allocate…

Analytical solution for the transient response of symmetric magnetoelectric laminated beams

2010

In this paper an analytical solution is presented for the forced vibration problem of magnetoelectric symmetric laminated beams. In deriving the mathematical model the Timoshenko’s beam theory is used and the electric and magnetic fields are assumed to be quasi-static. The model is written for a magnetoelectric sensing device by applying proper magnetoelectric boundary conditions on the beam top and bottom surfaces. The model highlights that the magneto-electro-mechanical couplings affect the bending stiffness and that the magnetoelectric inputs can be treated as equivalent bending moments. Forced vibration analyses are presented to assess the reliability of the solution.
